Henkel Adhesive Technologies introduces Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE, a heat seal coating for a wide range of applications, including hygiene products

With Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE, Henkel Adhesive Technologies is presenting a heat seal coating that is fully compatible with recycling and fulfills high safety standards due to the use of harmless ingredients, the company said in a release. Whether it be cereals, laundry detergent or medication, primary and secondary packaging is used to protect products against environmental influences. In particular, manufacturers seek a coating solution made from sustainable ingredients.

Coating solutions for primary and secondary packaging need to meet high requirements. An increasing number of companies from the food and non-food industries require a solution that allows packaging to be recycled and reduces plastic waste in the value chain. At the same time, safety plays an important role, which is why the solution needs to contain safe chemicals and thus also be suitable for food packaging.

To fulfill these requirements, Henkel has launched the heat seal coating Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE. The product only contains ingredients classified as harmless and is free of substances of concern such as mineral oils, meaning it can be used to seal primary packaging in direct contact with food without any problems. Under certain conditions, Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE is suitable for use in the manufacturing of food packaging materials in accordance with US FDA and European guidelines as well as recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

New solution enables sustainable packaging design

With Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE, Henkel is placing emphasis on sustainability. The product is proven to be compatible with recycling in accordance with accredited testing institutes. It also opens the door for sustainable packaging designs by enabling paper to be used instead of plastic for primary and secondary packaging.

This is made possible by the product’s compliance with recycling, as the solution can be seamlessly integrated into the paper conversion process and can replace PE and PE-coex paper. Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE therefore helps to reduce the use of plastic packaging without compromising on performance or product efficiency.

It demonstrates excellent sealability against itself and against paper, while the low initiation temperature of the seal ensures higher efficiency. Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE can also be applied by flexographic and rotogravure technologies for a wide variety of paper packaging solutions, guaranteeing maximum strength even at high machine speeds.

“The new innovative recycling compatible heat seal coating is paving the way for new, sustainable packaging opportunities,” says Cagri Turkmen, market strategy manager Europe, flexible packaging adhesives at Henkel. “With Loctite Liofol HS 2819 RE, we are creating a future-proof, environmentally sustainable solution for a wide range of applications – from hygiene products and tea bags to e-commerce deliveries.”
