To expand its production capabilities, the Chandigarh-headquartered Toppan Speciality Films’ has announced a significant investment in Bobst technology, acquiring three additional Bobst Expert K5 metallizers to be delivered over the next 12 months.
According to a news update posted on the Bobst website, with the purchase of the three new machines, Toppan Speciality Films will be home to eight Bobst metallizers. Toppan, a manufacturer of specialty films, label films and graphic lamination films, expects to enhance its manufacturing capabilities through the integration of the new Bobst metallizers.
Toppan Speciality Films CEO and whole-time director, Manohara Kumar (center, in picture), told Packaging South Asia that two out of the three metallizers will be commissioned within this financial year, with the third one coming online early in the next financial year.
“TSF remains a leader in specialty films, and the integration of the latest technologies is crucial. These metallizers are part of our expansion in CPP and BOPP lines and support our GL film journey,” he said in an email reply. Manohara Kumar emphasized the critical role played by the company’s advanced facilities in delivering high-quality packaging solutions to customers. The company’s flagship GL film range, which is used in a wide variety of fields, including the food, pharmaceutical, and industrial materials sectors, is said to be a sustainable alternative to metallized and other films.
With a focus on sustainability-focused packaging alternatives, these metallizers are expected to incorporate value-added features such as AlOx GEN II—a next-generation clear barrier process for mono-material flexible packaging materials—along with AluBond for improved metal adhesion and dyne levels, as well as the Hawkeye pinhole detector, Bobst stated in the news update. All the K5 Expert metallizers for Toppan will be manufactured in Bobst Manchester.

Toppan says the strategic expansion with Bobst Expert K5 Metallizers signifies a step toward operational excellence in the Indian packaging industry. By investing in next-generation Bobst technology to enhance its operational capabilities, Toppan says it is not only enhancing its production capacity but also shaping the future of packaging solutions on a global scale.
In previous articles after our visit to Toppan’s Punjab plant and our interaction with Manohara Kumar at the Chandigarh office, Packaging South Asia had reported about TSF’s plan to get three new metalizers and a new 7-layer CPP line. A new hybrid BOPP-BOPE line is also set to become operational by mid-2025, for which work is going on in full swing.
drupa 2024
Toppan Speciality Films was present at the drupa show in Dusseldorf. Speaking about the show that was held as an in-person event after eight years, Manohara Kumar told Packaging South Asia that the exhibition was very successful for the company. He said the team had the opportunity to present its solutions to numerous brands and customers who visited its stand at drupa. “The event facilitated many engaging discussions with both our current and potential customers.”
“With our recent vision shift from being India’s most admired supplier to becoming globally admired, drupa met our objectives. We were able to connect with new customers, allowing us to initiate new business relationships and expand our global footprint.”
Toppan Speciality Films also participated in the recently concluded Global Conclave for Plastic Recycling & Sustainability at Bharat Mandapam New Delhi to showcase its range of recycled granules (both post-consumer recyclate & post-industrial recyclate) and sustainability solutions for various industrial applications.
According to Manohara Kumar, the response was great at the event, which allowed TSF to connect with various potential customers as well as technology providers. “The product range and solutions offered by TSF were very well appreciated by a large set of visitors,” he said.
