The Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing secure authentication solutions, highlighting several of its key initiatives at Packvision Expo 2024, held from 13 to 15 June in Pune. Among the highlights was the ASPA-CRISIL State of Counterfeiting Report, providing in-depth insights into current counterfeiting trends.

Puneet Maithani, associate director, ASPA said, “Along with our new initiatives and activities, we featured our sector-specific webinars and industry white papers, demonstrating our commitment to knowledge sharing and industry advancement.” ASPA’s stand displayed the diverse authentication and traceability solutions provided by its members to effectively combat counterfeiting.

Visitors learned about the benefits of ASPA membership, including access to the bi-monthly magazine, The Authentication Times. The ASPA supplier directory, an extensive resource detailing authentication and traceability technology offered by the members, was introduced. The directory is readily available for download on ASPA’s website. “We also showcased the recent launch of our Middle East and Africa (MEA) chapter,” Maithani said.

The association had the opportunity to engage with many new visitors who were unaware of the latest anti-counterfeiting technologies in the market. Maithani expressed his desire to see more anti-counterfeiting solution providers in upcoming editions of Packvision, which could further enhance awareness among the sectors.

Maithani spoke about ASPA’s contribution to the anti-counterfeiting industry and how they raise awareness about the critical importance of robust authentication and traceability practices. “Through a multi-faceted approach, focusing on awareness, advocacy, research, and innovation, ASPA educates stakeholders on the risks and impacts of counterfeiting. Advocacy efforts involve strategic collaborations with industry stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and governmental agencies to promote the adoption of strong authentication & traceability standards and policies.”

Future of anti-counterfeiting industry

The future of the anti-counterfeiting industry, he says, will be marked by significant advancements driven by technology and innovation. As counterfeiters employ increasingly sophisticated methods, the industry must continuously evolve to stay ahead. “Emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and advanced biometrics will play pivotal roles in developing more secure and robust authentication & traceability solutions.”

According to him, the success of the anti-counterfeiting industry in establishing and enforcing stringent standards will hinge on the collaborative efforts of industry stakeholders, regulatory bodies, governments, and, most importantly, public awareness and education campaigns. All this will foster a culture of vigilance and empower consumers to make informed choices.

Integrating digital and physical authentication solutions will bolster traceability and transparency across supply chains and pose a significant challenge to counterfeit products attempting to infiltrate the market,” Maithani says. “The anti-counterfeiting sector will continue to grow, driven by technological advancements, regulatory support, and a collective commitment to combatting counterfeit goods worldwide.”
