Swiss Pac, a manufacturer of printed stand-up pouches, coffee bags, tea packaging pouches, and flat bottom pouches, highlighted its eco-friendly stand-up pouches at ProPak India 2024. Swiss Pac’s display shelf at the busy stand was categorized into sections of eco-friendly packaging solutions – SwissLoop, WasteMade, PaperMade, and PlantMade.

SwissLoop is a type of recyclable packaging made from monolayer films with barrier properties to package food products. WasteMade is produced from recycled content (PCR), with around 30-40% of recycled content laminated with PE. It is primarily for non-food packaging as it does not share the same barrier properties as SwissLoop.
WasteMade, the company says, helps in reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the oceans and landfills. The company has a whole range of PlantMade products made from cellulose-based films that are said to be compostable. PaperMade products from Swiss Pac are said to be completely plastic-free and offer paper packaging solutions that simultaneously protect and preserve the environment.
The company recently integrated an HP Indigo 25K digital press into its operations in Gujarat. Explaining the shift, Gopi, director of marketing at Swiss Pac, shared insights on market trends, “Digital printing is growing due to the increasing demand for smaller packaging quantities. Startups, in particular, prefer this solution as it offers an economically viable way to test their products in the market.”

Addressing the evolving dynamics of the printing market, Gopi discussed how digital, flexo and gravure printing coexist to meet varied demands. For example, Southern India, a significant coffee market, benefits from digital printing’s flexibility to handle numerous SKUs within the coffee segment. However, as a specific SKU gains market traction and its demand rises, businesses often transition to gravure printing for cost-effectiveness. “Many established brands with high product demand continue to rely on gravure printing and have no immediate plans to adopt digital printing,” Gopi added.
At the recently concluded Labelexpo India, Swiss Pac invested in a Flexcel NX Wide 4260 system from Miraclon, diversifying into the world of flexographic printing which is establishing traction in high quality flexible packaging with a mid web flexo label press from Multitec and a CI flexo press from Comexi.
