Mamata Extrusion Systems has been in business since 1989. A well-known name in the field of bag making and pouch making machines and also for co-extrusion blown film lines, Mamta Extrusion is one of the gold sponsors of the ongoing Indiaplast 2019 show. “The establishment of PMMAI, which is the nodal organization behind the event, is chaired by Mahendra Patel, the chairman and managing director of Mamata Extrusions,” says Apurva Kane, senior vice president of Mamata Extrusion Systems.
The theme for Mamata at the show is to run recyclable films on its machines. “The idea is that there are many products which don’t need PE or LDPE laminates. This is because PE and LDPE laminates are ideally not recyclable laminates. When you have a composite laminate where there is half PE and half LDPE, you cannot separate it easily. Therefore, commercially they cannot be recycled. They can only be recycled in a laboratory. But there are many products such as salt, detergent, atta and pulses which don’t really need PE or LDPE for protection. Most of the brand owners and various players in the industry are using PE and LDPE purely from the aesthetics point of view because it looks glossy and attractive,” says Kane.
In the last 15-20 years, there have been a lot of changes in polymer technology and processing technology and that is what the company is trying to show. “If you make a packet out of a simple 3-layer co-extruded LLDP film, aesthetically it will look as good as PE pouch. Therefore, it is possible to switch back at least for packaging products such as detergents and salt. The consumption of laminates for detergent and salt is 60,000 tons a year. So using the alternative that Mamata is providing, one can stop 60,000 tons of non-recyclable films from going into the landfills,” he adds.
At the show, Mamata displayed a wicketing machine which converts plastic films into bags for hygiene products such as diapers and sanitary napkins. The machine can make up to 400 bags a minute. Another machine displayed by Mamata was an in-line preformed pouch making machine. The company is currently desgining a machine where the filling also can be done in-line. In one other machine, the company was running center seal pouches with lap seal from LLLD film. The third machine on display is the high-speed side seal machine capable of producing 800 bags a minute with automatic stacking.
Talking about the show, Kane says, “The show is generating good footfalls. There are a lot of serious attendees at the show. We have been receiving good enquiries as well. Plastics is a huge industry and there is immense scope for more players to enter and going by the crowd that the show is generating, I think people are getting a lot more serious with time.”
