IndiaPack, the 6th international packaging exhibition held in Mumbai from 8 to 11 October 2015, laid a perfect platform to bring the packaging industry under one roof. It provided good business opportunities for manufacturers of rigid and flexible packaging materials and allied industries to showcase innovative technologies, product and services to national and international end-users.

The event was held to venerate the golden jubilee of Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous institute working under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises. The earlier five editions of the IndiaPack held in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013 in Mumbai have helped transformed the event into a strong and unparalleled brand in the world packaging industry. The World Packaging Congress was held concurrently with the IndiaPack.

NC Saha, director of the IIP, said the IndiaPack acted as an encouraging business platform for over 300 exhibitors and visitors who participated in the four-day event. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had reserved a pavilion at the show for their respective states, he added. Commenting on the pavilion, RVS Ramakrishna, chairman of the IIP, said, “The Andhra Pradesh government identified a 100-acre plot in T Sirsapalli for packaging and the government wants IIP to be a part of it.”

Rajani Rashmi, additional secretary of the Central Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was the chief guest at the event. He said, “The government is committed to the growth of the packaging industry in India. Under the Foreign Trade Policy, the government is incentivising the packaging industry, particularly for food exports and perishable goods.” He requested the stakeholders in the industry to take advantage of it.

Ajanta Print Arts, which is into cartons produced from board, Metpet and transparent PP, displayed innovative packages for products like Godrej locks in white board cartons with window patch to personal care products printed on Metpet board with embossing effects. Many unique designs were produced, few were designed in-house and printed at the production facility.

Ajanta Print Arts was awarded the India Star at the event for Cartini premium knives and scissors products. These products were introduced in the market by Godrej and Boyce for 28 different variants of household products. Cartini packs were printed on 400 microns of rigid Polypropylene (PP) and different grammage of paperboard. With the help of 6-color coater press and UV inks, the printing was done on PP board. The complete design on graphics with structure was executed inhouse for a period of 12 months.

Ajanta Print Arts was also awarded for in-mould labels it designed for Elephant House, an ice cream brand. Vignette and finishing effects as well as the use of Pantone color on 80 micron PP film were well appreciated. Vikas Khanna, director of Ajanta Print Arts, said “This show provides a platform to interact with our current and prospective customers in the packaging industry. IndiaPack acts as a connecting bridge between converters and end-users. Through this event, we have communicated with right people in the industry. Few professionals from medium scale industries have expressed interest in better packages for branding their products.”

New Delhi-based Pearl Polymers, which produces PET bottles under the brand name Pearl petformajor brands, was also awarded the IndiaStar at the World Packaging Congress event. Pearlpet got the India Star award for PET container, Crown Jar. Due to its unique design with coated stainless steel cap and bottom for closure of transparent jar, PET polymer is used to make bottles which are recyclable, unbreakable, odourless, food grade and environmental-friendly.

Udit Seth, executive director of Pearl Polymers, talked about lightweight jars and the use of patented technology in in-mould labels. He said, “Pearl Polymers has used the patented technology to adhere to in-mould labels around the PET containers. Adhesion of in-mould labels around polypropylene and HDPE containers is easy but for PET it has not been done, except by us. Such solutions are cost-effective and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the product.”

Holographic division showed different holograms with labels and different ink.

Commenting on the new aseptic packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat, that will be operational by April 2017, Amit Ray, group president of packaging business, said, “There is a good demand for aseptic packaging. More demand is to be created as doneby Kellogg’s inIndia forbreakfast cereals.Itwillbe ourfirstplantinWesternIndia to meet the demands of domestic and global markets.”

Manipal Utility pack was exhibited forthe first time at the event. It sponsored the entrance gate of the exhibition. Manipal utility is a leading paperboard packaging company that meet the demands of perfumes, fine liquor, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals with cartons and labels.

VivianAnthony, chief of business development, said, “IndiaPack acted as a forum to connect with the existing clients and display high quality printed cartons and labels. Manipal Utility is equipped with production facilities at Manipal, Chennai and Ahmedabad. It produces more than a million cartons in a day at the Ahmedabad plant.”

Manipal Utility received nine awards from IIP for unique designs in packaging for products such as Jazz Night carton and Golden Moment. Jazz Night carton is printed on metalized sapphire graphic board with six color. The pack is soft touch laminated with spot UV and embossing finish. Golden Moment is an enticing carton printed with beautiful golden designs in front of the box. Gold stencils is used on front side of the box. The pack is laminated with metallized film and spot UV that adds to the luxury appearance of the pack.
