Pressman Solutions and Kodak in association with the Bombay Masters Printers’ Association (BMPA) organized a seminar on prepress workflow for packaging in Mumbai on 19 April. The speakers during the seminar were K. Panthala Selvan, founder of Chennai-based Pressman Solutions and Michael Bialko of Kodak. In attendance were mostly carton printers and a few label printers.

Selvan began his presentation by talking about the importance of well-planned and designed artwork. He said that designers of artwork should keep in mind where the artwork is going whether its is meant for packaging, newspaper or website. He pointed out that quality of artwork is very important. “Quality of input decides the quality of output. If garbage goes in only garbage will come out,” he said.

The pre-press stage starts from the very point the design starts getting planned, he said. When the artwork is being designed it is very important that not only proper design software is used but also that the correct version is used.

“During the design planning stage, one should have all necessary information,” he added.
Another point that Selvan put forward was that the software should be used for its intended purpose and image manipulation should be paid careful attention to.
Quality of the image is also very important in creating a quality file. He said that convertors should talk to customers and ask for high resolution images. Convertors at their end should pay attention to aspects such as putting hoods on the monitors.

“Monitor is an important tool is the process and convertors at their end should put a proper hood on so that the light does not impact the color of the images,” Selven said. In addition to applying a hood, proper calibration of the monitors is also required. Apart from things like starting with the best file, working with right software and maintaining the image quality, some other things that need to be taken care of during the pre-press stage are: making image change before importing them, keeping track of colors, images built to size, proper naming of the file, using font management program.

He said that print production workflow should always end with the quality control process.
