On Thursday 10 September 2020, at 11:35 AM – 11:50 AM GMT +2 which is 3:05 PM – 3:20 PM Indian standard time, Dr Russell Sion, managing director of Jenton Dimaco will speak at an AIPIA Virtual Congress session on minimizing food waste using label verification, data sharing and analysis. In the UK alone, some 355,000 tons of food are wasted each year before reaching the consumer. Much of this is due to food labeling errors forcing costly emergency product withdrawals. Food labels contain a vast quantity of relevant commercial data, including price and weight, but more importantly, to the consumer is the health-associated data such as use-by dates and allergen information.

Jenton Dimaco design and manufacture world-leading label verification systems. Primarily found in the food processing industry, its systems verify all aspects of labeling from artwork to allergens. This presentation will show that the key to label verification is data sharing and analysis. There needs to be cameras and lighting to ensure that systemic failures are not incorrectly validated (e.g., telling the printer to print the wrong date and then checking it has) a robust label verification database linked to the producer’s own production system is required.

Once that is in place, it doesn’t matter whether the labels are printed text, barcodes, RFID, NFC, or any combination of these. It is then possible to deploy a highly resilient and traceable label verification system. As well as discussing the technical requirements of such a system, short videos of systems running on various food lines will demonstrate the real-world limitations and benefits of using such systems.
