AMUT upgrades Mohawk's PET washing plant

American flooring manufacturer Mohawk Industries has opted for AMUT’s solutions to upgrade its PET washing plant, in Summerville, Georgia, US. AMUT upgraded the flake washing system at Mohawk in September 2022.

Established in 1958, AMUT is a global plastic processing, recycling and waste sorting and recovery systems designer and manufacturer.

Anthony Georges, president of AMUT North America, said they had done a trial of their dirty flakes a  few years ago in their patented AMUT PET flake washing system. “It demonstrated the cleanliness of  their material and how much more efficiently they could operate their fiber extrusion lines. The results were extremely positive and as such Mohawk purchased our 4,000 Kg/Hr flake washing system.”

Mark Dye, Mohawk’s VP of Recycling Operations, confirmed the results. “The AMUT friction washer is a  great machine for removing and cleaning our PET flakes, along with their Turbo washer unit, which assists  in the removal of the inorganic fines that are embedded in the dirty MRF PET Bottle Bales. The cleanliness  translates into improved performance in our downstream processes. Since we are a vertically integrated  business with our own recycling plant, extrusion fiber operation and carpet manufacturing production  plants, we are seeing the quality improvements immediately with a cleaner flake.”

“Our engineering team at Mohawk worked very closely with the AMUT design, fabrication, and installations  teams. The challenges of working through Covid protocols were complicated, along with the massive  flooding in our region this past summer shutting down the area, yet the teams rose to the challenges and  were successful in the implementation of the line into our existing system. The remarkable issue about the  AMUT flake washing system is that we reduced the water and chemicals consumption in the cleaning process  while achieving better quality.”

We are looking forward to working with AMUT again in the future.”
